Venezia Lowis
Creative Director and Fashion Designer of Kurawa About Venezia was born in Cilacap, Central Java, whose parents originated from Aceh and Palembang. She has spent her babyhood in Indramayu, West Java. Starting kindergarten, she moved to a village in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, there she became the only different ethnic family living in harmony without racism. Young Venezia grew up without complacent of any fairytales, she just found her interest when her father told how he kept a baby crocodile in Jambi, how terrifying the forest he worked, and how tigers slept around where he stayed. Starting elementary school, Venezia lived with 2 fighting cocks and various kinds of 9 birds in Tangerang, Banten. Four years later, Venezia moved to suburb, West Jakarta until now. But sometimes, Venezia takes a walk along the chili, tomato, and mustard fields which are not far from her father’s small forest in Puncak. Nature, wildlife, and animals have important place in Venezia’s heart. She even has a daydream to sketch Kurawa's batik collection (her first RTW clothing line) in a wooden house in the middle of forest accompanying by the sound of singing birds. Why batik? Because for her, simple natural life is just like a floral motif on cotton batik cloth... Biography In 2007, Venezia became a jewelry and bag designer for Hilarious, a designer label that she established together with her colleague. At the same time, she was a co-founder and a creative director of an environmental youth organization named JADUL (The Youth Care). The organization cooperated with UNICEF Indonesia and Indonesian Child Welfare Foundation. She made recycled products, which were marketed at Gran Melia hotel. In June 2008, soon after Venezia resigned from her internship as a stylist at Dresscode Magazine, she was offered a position as a fashion contributor for Gogirl! Magazine. In the same year, Venezia came out as a winner in a make up contest held by Mustika Puteri. In late 2009, she designed recycled shopping bags made of rice sacks with nature-patterned fabrics, which were presented for free to visitors who won in "Indonesia Quiz" during the event Climate Forum in Copenhagen, Denmark. Danish Countess Alexandra, Princess of Denmark, is known to possess one of the shopping bags. In October 2010, Venezia with her partners as a team became the finalist of Senayan Fabulous Beauty Showcase - Fashion Design Competition. In July 2011, Venezia showed her first couture collection titled Legacy of Ancient Beauty for Mascarade Mystique Fashion Show at Balai Sarbini, Plaza Semanggi. Venezia Lowis earned fashion design diploma at Lasalle College International. Soon after graduating, she was working as a fashion design assistant for Sally Koeswanto. Since the beginning of 2012, Venezia was working on made-to-measure couture gowns or formalwear exclusively ordered by her clients. Now, in the end of 2014, she is focusing to run her very first ready to wear brand titled Kurawa - Batik Boho Pop. |
